Is Your Glass Half Full? • RI Family Photographer

Have you ever had a week, a month, or even a year where nothing seems to go right?  2018 has been that year for me.  From the very beginning, this year has been the one that has thrown things at me left and right.

A hospitalization with pneumonia just before leaving on a 3-week long vacation.  Getting sick on that vacation and being given medication that made me practically lose my mind.  Adopting a puppy who has a mystery illness and some behavior issues and has cost me thousands upon thousands of dollars in vet bills and training.  Getting a two stress fractures that have put me on crutches for four weeks, and at least for more.  No running, no surfing.

That's just a short list.  Whenever we're hit over and over with obstacles, it can be so easy to be overwhelmed.  To feel like nothing good is going to happen.  It becomes easy to wallow in that negative place and think that we're somehow a magnet for bad experiences.  I know.  I've been there.  I know a lot of people who have been there.

A few years ago I learned that simply changing my point of view to a "glass half full" one has a huge impact on how I feel and how I view everything, including bad situations.  It may not change an outcome.  Or maybe it will.  But it will make you happier.  Calmer.  It will make those tough things easier to accept and to work through.  It's so much better than being negative and stressed all the time.  Even your physical health can improve.

It's easy to do.  It might take a little practice to constantly switch your thought process to always look for the positive if you don't already.  With time, you'll find your mind naturally gravitating towards the positive.  It really makes all the difference.

Seeing the glass as half full instead of half empty made me realize that I'm lucky that I live somewhere that there is medical treatment to help me when I got pneumonia.  I got to go back to the island I love and be warm in the winter, and take so many photos and make more memories.  Our dog is a character who really loves me.  Recently, I've been able to do so much more reading, something which I love, because I have had to rest my leg.  The other day I stood in the ocean.

Don't all those things sound good?  It's the same list of things from the beginning of this blog post, just viewed from a positive point of view.

Keep your glass half full.  It'll be good, I promise.
